Hi Amy,

Not sure where to find this video. You could ask John Mark himself on his blog here:

http://johnmarkmcmillan.blogspot.com/

He may know of where you can view the video.

(let us know if you come up with anything!)

Any ideas why the John Mark McMillan version of "How He Loves Us" is no longer available on YouTube? Please, please, please email me if you know a version of his video accessible in which he explains the inspiration of the song. Thanks, ab

This brings to mind one thing I learned from a New Church Bootcamp: "We need to be ATTRACTIVE, not ATTRACT." The concept and question of relevancy is a big one, but I think you've hit the nail on the head.

Agreed. As a music minister I know one of the most important concepts for any of the musicians/singers to grasp is that we have to simply Love the people, the worshippers in our church. We need to Love them to a place of communion with Christ through worship.

In this position it's easy to get upset with church-goers who don't "worship" but what I remind myself of is that these people don't know how to worship! They've never been taught because The Church now relies on the light shows and crazy videos during the music to get us there instead of the worship pastors. Instead of worshipping, we now just nod along like we're at a rock show in some dive bar.

Not sure why I got so off topic but it felt right, haha!

thank you, mark. thank you, thank you, thank you. pastoring a community is not at all about people management. it's about taking each person by the hand, leading them to the hand of the Father, and knowing when to get out of the way. sometimes, like a little child, they will want to let go and run rampid, so we simply just take their hand again and lead them back to the Father until they can understand and trust His love. it's not about crowd control.

preach on, dear brother, preach on! now that i am out of paid ministry, i find myself loving and ministering more than ever! i'm finding myself in a rather interesting predicament, though. for quite some time, i've said that it would take God incarnet standing in front of me and telling me to go back into any position of ministry leadership for me to actually do it. now my life seems to be organically going that way, and it leaves me perplexed. so i've come up with a rather simple resolution: love. simply just love, knowing it is impossible for me to truly love out of my own capacity. you see, to love as YHWH loves compells justice, service, and truth. then and only then will true ministry (paid or not) happen. if i lunge into the firey passion of YHWH's love and allow myself to be consumed, then i am capable of nothing less than a Godly love for the Body, and furthermore, the World. but i must let go of myself and be consumed.

Amy!
I didn't know you had a blog. I will blogroll you post-haste.

Good points about "paid" ministry. I've been there also and it is very easy to just punch the clock every day, collect a paycheck and feel like you've done your duty in ministry, when that's really not what happened at all.

And it's not necessarily the church/employer's fault. Sometimes it is though. At times I looked back at jobs I had in the world and thought: "Wow, I used to do a lot more ministry when I worked in the 'World'." And that might be my fault but either way it's dangerous.

Very little ministry actually happens inside the walls of Church. And that's actually a good thing...kind of. It's really only half of the concept. The idea is that we as believers can go to Church and get filled to the brim with the Word so that we can go out and minister to the people who are outside the "four walls" of Church. But the problem is that so many churches are delivering a "feel good" gospel now in place of solid, Bible beating, scripture cramming Word these days; and the people in Church aren't being equipped enough to minister outside the "four walls". We are witnessing it all over the country. Our focus has shifted from getting the lost into Heaven, to getting people into our Church.

Inward vs. Outward.

thank you, russ for both definitions. i think both are very accurate. now, i should probably reveal my bias here as someone whose life has been wrecked by "full time ministry" and have had to go through immense healing since. i've been in the paid full-time position before and, quite honestly, as much as a paid minister loves and cares for the people, it is all too easy for it to become a job. go in, punch the clock, manage people... it's so easy to forget how to just love the people and become motivated out of obligation rather than the love, acceptance, and forgiveness of Christ. it is a very fine line to walk.

now, there is also the aspect of life as ministry. this is where the Body comes into play. as it says in Acts, "they shall know you by your love for each other." (paraphrased, of course.) it is in the daily interactions between the Body that ministry truly happens. and it is in the way that the Body interacts with the World that ministry becomes real.

those are just some initial thoughts.

2 contexts.

1) A staff ministry position in which you are PAID for full-time hours in which you are expected to minister to and serve members of your faith community and general community at large.

2) As some have said before. Life. It's a faith walked out, lived out daily. Ministry in it's basic form means to provide for the needs of others. So full-time ministry would be serving others, providing for the needs of others, all the time.

Life.

I know that's kind of trite...but seriously, it's not about whether it's your full-time paid employment, but about whether you are being a minister of God's Kingdom full time...or just part time.

Hot...or just luke-warm...

Dear Sir ,

Greetings in the most beautiful name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

My name waqas gill I am from Pakistan . I am an Urdu and Punjabi Translator .

I recently visited your website and am very impressed by the work that you are doing. I truly want to be a member of your ministry/church and work with you as your representative in Pakistan. Please do let me know how can I do it? Thanks.

I also want to express my desire to translate any of your materials into Urdu, Punjabi,

languages. I believe doing this would spread the Word of God among native people into their languages of interest, in Pakistan, India and around the world.

I look forward to hearing from you soon. God bless you.

this post really got me thinking.

i would love to talk this topic with you, Josh, Marilyn Hickey (and Tozer, if we can raise him)..now THAT would be a conversation worth taking notes on!

The catch is that the temptations inherent in "megachurch" creep in as soon as you get..say, 12 people in a church..

If you wanna see blog ADD go and look what I did to Mandy Thompsons's post on favourite music... I scare myself.

Anyway, summer - December to Feb...although it would appear winter in Sydney = summer in Portland anyway.

If social media were left up to Australians, it would never have happened you know, since we're at the beach all day...pondering where it's at, with our dual turntables and microphones...I actually heard that song in a bookstore tonight. Weird.

My problem is, much like in a prayer life, the longer I spend away, the more I feel the need to "catch up," like my first post back needs to be extraordinary to make up for lost time. The less I blog, the harder it becomes.

Mark...couldn't agree more. One thing I've noticed is I am more interested in blogging when people are talking back. Maybe we are guilty of reading but not taking time to respond to those blogs that provoke and interest us. Would you be more encouraged to blog more often if that were the case? For me the answer is yes! and I'm guilty of reading and not responding as well...sigh

thanks for clarifying that! I wasn't sure and I don't like to presume one way or the other; you might have very good reasons for focusing more on "young" and I may be oblivious-- (hey, it could happen!).

I often read the gospels and think of Judaism in Jesus' day as having fallen into a very legalistic, doctrinal approach to God and that alerts me to the danger that every good, God-inspired movement will face: the temptation to turn it into a formula.

I tend to cringe when folks say, "Christianity isn't a religion, it's a *relationship*" because it IS a religion - which is relational at its very core! We humans are exceedingly fond of pigeonholes... *sigh* Perhaps it gives us the illusion we've got a better handle on reality?! Lord only knows-- anyway, I appreciate your thoughtful approach and your enthusiasm for worship and sharing the gospel - blessings!

Thanks so much for your input Lynn! Great stuff!

My intent was not to focus completely on "young" church and I completely agree with your point.

Yeah, it seems like these great movements eventually become bureaucracy and need to be thrown out. And maybe that's the crux of being an imperfect human being trying to hang out in the presence of God all the time. We accomplish something great and (like you said) turn the method into doctrine instead of focusing on what God actually wants to do!

Thoughtful post, Mark, and a few thoughts in response. I'm struck by your focus on "young church" or perhaps you mean more than simply age of parishioners? I was part of the Vineyard in the mid-70s when it was still a Bible study in Larry Norman's Beverly Hills apartment and as it outgrew that location and started to become a Sunday morning church gathering instead of a Friday night Bible study I was bothered by the fact that this vibrant Christian community was almost entirely attractive young people; hardly anyone over 30 (!!). I looked at my young son and realized that I didn't want him to think the Body of Christ was comprised only of folks that could make a living as actors, models, and musicians.

Where were the middle-aged, infirm, elderly? Where were families with pregnant moms or pimply teens? Where were the wise Christians who had walked with Jesus, grown from grappling with their faith through life's challenges? Where were people who had wasted decades in folly and were now grateful to be included, aware of the grace they'd received and doubly appreciative because their future days were growing few?

I didn't want my son to see the Body of Christ in such a limited variation and think that was normative.

I've never been a big fan of program churches but maybe that's just me. My church is small enough that there's no place to hide so it takes a fairly confident person (or a very hungry one!) to wander in and come back for more. FWIW, it's almost always young folks. It's an interesting dynamic.

I kind of figure that just as each generation has to learn as individuals, so do churches. Knowledge isn't static nor is it inherited: we each have to grasp it for ourselves and make it real. Most of it isn't intuitive and when we figure out something that works we tend to freeze it, set it in concrete so we won't lose it, but all that really does is mummify it and after a few generations there's an escape or collapse and life is renewed. The downside for non-denominational churches is continual reinvention of the wheel ("doh! I could've had a V8!") - there can be advantages to church traditions; some of them are well-grounded in scripture and God can --and often does-- use them powerfully.

But we're two or three generations into the age of "have it your way" church and I think you've rather succinctly put your finger on how that can manifest!

On the other hand, Paul in his lifetime had to chastise the church for wanting to remain babes, spoon-fed a milky diet rather than developing the muscle to chew meat... it's not a new problem! Blessings--

I hope blogging continues to grow. It allows us a personal voice to the author. Gives a place to discuss or just share our opinion. I think that is good.

And I have blogged 2 days in a row. Haha. Been a while :)

Argh I'm so struggling with what to do! I've been thinking of the guest blogging route as well. Life's gotten wicked busy with kids and band and the rest of normal life :)
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one though. Honestly, what's even harder than keeping my blog up to date is keeping up with everyone else's! Geez. Sometimes I feel that by the time I do finally get around to it that I'm irrelevant to the conversation.
We still are talking about people trying not to succumb to the blog fade right?

Did he say he had 2 turntables and a microphone? I have a mic. I'd like a turntable! I have a shirt that says, "I rock the mic like a vandal!" It's red. Hey is that a red hummer in your flickr flash boxes up there?...
I'm with David :)

In addition to my apologising for not blogging as much, I've been trying to post a little bit through the current lunacy...even if it's just short (not Twitter short, but short) updates on where it's at.

...I got two turntables and a microphone...

Sorry, I'm easily distracted at the moment...often by my own mind...

Well said Mark! I have felt the same way you are feeling for the past few years. Many conversations with friends just like yours who are dumbing down the gospel to try to get people to commit to it. That is why Curt and I loved ORCC so much! We never felt like Pastor Reece and Sarah were more committed to the "show" than they were to the HS moving. We loved it and miss it so much! I think Christianity in America is losing is spice because we are dumbing it down so much. We will never compete with movie theater's and concerts if we dont keep Jesus and the cross at the forefront and give the HS time and a place to move :)
I hope you keep screaming this message from the top of your lungs. The church of America needs to hear it. Bless you guys! Cant wait for June to make her arrival.

I can't help but think what we're seeing these days is simply a poor copy of the originals; just bad art. Churches that are still around who started out as groups of artists looking to experience God "Wholly." That is to say letting God have the freedom to move in a worship service, by honoring the arts as an expression of God and by making room for God's spirit. That idea took off but people forgot the inspiration behind it. Basically I think it's a Christian trend, a WWJD bracelet for steeples. A fine idea if incorporated into an existing church model but a poor one as a single rationale . I can picture church folk visiting those original churches and saying "Wow, did you see all those people? This kind of service is great!" But without reason behind that you just get flash and shine...
Great post Mark

Such an awesome post Mark.

You've said it all. Jesus is relevant. He is our role model.

Like, duh?! How do we so easily forget that and get caught up in the latest shiny new toy.

Don't answer that, I know already :)

Its interesting to think about "church" & the different developments / eveolutions its been thru in history. In its infancy, it just struggled to stay alive, literally and yet, under unbelievable pressure, it completely flourished. Futhermore, I look at church in an int'l context & the places where "church" is experiencing explosive growth is in many places where there's signficant persecution. Its also growing the most where there's a strong move of the HS. I'm mostly thinking aloud here, so sorry to meander.
Here's my conclusion: the HS is essential to church. Anytime church is done w/out the HS it eventually collapses.
As for relevance, I believe there's an organic tension between making the HS comfortable & welcome along w making people "comfy". Jesus came for people & that's indisputable. He died on the cross for the selfish & magnanomous. He died on the cross for the consumer & surrendered. His death & resurrectn are without our qualificatns. As for growing, yes, we need to grow & I believe that the HS uses church as an integral part of our spiritual development. The cross is horizontal & vertical - horizontal in our interpersonal relatnships & vertical in relating to the Divine Trinity. Both components are essential to the cross becoming all that its intended to be in our lives - Col 3:3. Church requires to HS to be everything she's supposed to be - most of all the bride of Christ.
Sorry to ramble, but just some thoughts

Awesome post...
I've been hearing about this type of scenario quite a bit lately and think the whole "cool church at the expense of God really moving" thing is destined for failure. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for cool and relevant church, but NEVER when it puts the primary focus (God moving in peoples lives, go figure) on the back burner. At some point those 'cool church' recruits will find themselves getting bored, wanting more and looking to churches who focus on Him first and being cool/relevant second.

The thing that is somewhat confusing, is it seems like we hold very tightly to traditions/ideas that are ~50 years old rather than Biblical things that are 2k+ years old. It's an interesting dynamic, having society change, and watching how the church sways with that rhythm.

So well said and couldn't agree with you more, Mark. We've become "of" the world instead of strictly in it. We attend church to consume instead of be discipled. We're so NOT transformed we have to be marketed to, "Tell us what we need and we'll buy it." But if it isn't instant and easy, we're off looking for something new, like the children in the market Jesus spoke of in Matt 11:16-17 who are never satisfied, but constantly acting the contrary critics. Where is the revelation that sets us free? We desperately need to be awakened from this dullness of heart.

this touched my heart - especially after seeing the disappointment on your face as you came home from service last night.

What I want for these kids is also what God wants from me.

This is a great post, Mark. I led a high school small group for 3 years, and it was so discouraging for me as a leader to watch my group dwindle from 40 kids to 10 before the group ended. It's so easy, especially for me, to view this as a personal failure. God has since helped me come to terms with the fact that I was obedient to do everything he called me to do for those group of kids, despite the fact that many of them still aren't even living for God at all. My point is that no matter how unqualified or ineffective one may feel in youth ministry, those kids are still worth every minute spent trying to make them want God - even if they don't blink an eye at your most sincere and passionate attempts. I am currently not involved in any youth ministry, but I think I will always have a heart for the young generation. I still pray for those kids, who are now adults, from my old small group. I know there is a reason why God doesn't let me forget them.

I totally hear you on this Mark.

And I think if you recognise that it's a fine line to walk, it shows that you're not a jerk.

I was recently struggling with this same idea- especially the restraining your tongue thing. being in ministry you choose to surrender any freedom of speech which is practically impossible for me. God taught me that wisdom is more important than freedom of speech- here is the verse He showed me:
"But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere."
James 3:17

"willing to yield to others" wow. pretty challenging.

I hate the original version of this, but this does exactly what's needed. Justice - the saviours of the (pop) world. :)
